When working off-campus, we can use Google Chat (previously called Google Hangouts Chat) phone calls rather than a personal phone line. You will be able to place a call, free of charge, to some local numbers. However, you cannot receive calls.

This is a service provided by Google. We are providing these instructions, but will not be able to offer troubleshooting support. 

What you need:

  • Internet-connected computer with speakers and microphone
  • Mobile phone that can receive a text message with a verification code

How you do it:

  1. Go to https://hangouts.google.com/. (Please note: The chat.google.com link you use for regular conversations will not give you the phone call option)
  2. Choose "Phone Call".
  3. Type a phone number. (Tip: Choose your work number because it will place the call when you reach the last step!)
  4. Enter your cell phone number to receive a verification code.
  5. Enter the verification code.
  6. Accept the agreement (calls within the US are usually free, no emergency calls)

The call will be placed. Hang up if you're just setting it up right now.

Placing Calls:

  1. Go to https://hangouts.google.com/.
  2. Choose "Phone Call".
  3. Type a phone number (or choose one from the suggested list).
  4. Select "Call (number)"
    1. Please double check that the charge still reads $0.00.
  5. To end the call, select "End call". 

Please note: The number you are calling will see an incoming call from a "Private" or "Restricted" number. Also, you cannot receive calls using this method.
