If the victim of a theft comes to you for assistance:

  1. Call Public Safety (3379) to dispatch an officer. State your name, exact location, room number, and the nature of the problem. Have the complainant available to talk with the officer.
  2. Notify the Circulation unit (3486) that you have contacted Public Safety so
    that they can direct the officer to you upon their arrival.
  3. Try to convince the patron to remain until the Safety Officer arrives. If the patron
    wishes to leave, it would help Public Safety if you could establish where the victim can be contacted.

If you (a library staff member) are the victim of a theft:

  1. Call Public Safety (3379) to dispatch an officer. State your name, exact location,
    room number, and the nature of the problem. Remain available to talk to the Safety officer.
  2. Notify the Circulation unit (3486) that you have contacted Public Safety so
    they can direct the officer to you upon their arrival.

If you observe a theft taking place:

  1. Call Public Safety (4444) at once to report what you have seen. Try to give the
    dispatcher a good description of the thief, in addition to what you saw being taken.
  2. If possible, try to maintain a watch on the thief until the Safety officer arrives.
    DO NOT ATTEMPT TO PHYSICALLY DETAIN THE THIEF BY YOURSELF.
  3. Inform the Office of the Director that the incident has occurred.
