Unattended children occasionally appear in the Drew Library.  When they do visit, please keep in mind that most of them are the children of the Drew faculty, staff, or students.

Young Children (under 10):

  1. If the child is very young, lost, or frightened:
    1. Try to calm the child and find out where his/her parent (or other adult companion) is, or what his/her name and his/her parent's names are.
    2. Do not give the child any candy or other food as s/he may be allergic or diabetic.
    3. Try to locate the child's parent/adult companion and explain that young children must be supervised at all times in the Library.
    4. If the parent/adult companion cannot be located, take the child to the library's Administrative Office (or after hours to the Circulation unit) and inform the Circulation unit of the child's name and location in case the parent/adult companion asks for him/her.
    5. If the parent is not located promptly, contact Public Safety (3379) for assistance. Explain where the child is and the nature of the problem.
  2. If the child is doing something that could result in injury, or if the child appears to need help:
    1. Tell the child to stop the activity that is dangerous.  Physically remove the child from a possible threat only if this is absolutely necessary to his/her safety or the safety of others (e.g., s/he is sliding down the banister, playing on the stairs, etc.).  Touching the child is legal if you are trying to protect him/her or considerhim/her in jeopardy.
    2. Try to locate the child's parent/adult companion and explain that young children must be supervised at all times in the Library.
    3. If the parent/adult companion cannot be located, take the child to the library's Administrative Office (or after hours to the Circulation unit) and inform the Circulation unit of the child's name and location in case the parent/adult companion asks for him/her.
    4. If the parent is not located promptly, contact Public Safety (3379) for assistance. Explain  where the child is and the nature of the problem.
  3. If the child is using library materials or equipment improperly:
    1. Please explain or demonstrate their proper use.
    2. If the child is unwilling or unable to follow your guidelines, try to locate his/her parent/adult companion and explain the situation.
    3. If the parent/adult companion cannot be located, take the child to the library's Administrative Office (or after hours to the Circulation unit) and inform the Circulation unit of the child's name and location in case the parent/adult companion asks for him/her.
    4. If the parent is not located promptly, contact Public Safety (3379) for assistance. Explain  where the child is and the nature of the problem.

Older Children (10 and over):

  1. If an older child is disruptive or doing something that could result in injury or damage:
    1. Tell the child to stop any activity that is disruptive or dangerous.  If the child does not respond, try to find out whether the child is accompanied by a parent  or other adult, and then try to locate that person.
    2. If the parent/adult companion cannot be located in the library, the child to leave the building. If the child does not leave, call Public Safety
