sounds:

  1. Evacuate your work area immediately.  If possible, close all windows and doors.
It is not necessary to turn off lights or to lock doors.  Use the nearest exit.
  2. DO NOT USE THE ELEVATOR TO EXIT THE BUILDING
  3. Assist any handicapped persons out of the building, if possible, or direct them to the nearest restroom and report their location to the Circulation personnel posted outside the building.
  4. If someone refuses to leave, do not waste time arguing with him/her.  Report the person's location to Public Safety officials or Circulation personnel standing outside the building.
  5. While you are evacuating the building, try to help keep everyone moving out of the building in an orderly fashion.  If smoke or fumes are coming up a stairwell, use an alternate exit.
  6. Remember that a wet rag held in front of your nose and mouth will make it easier to breathe if there is a lot of smoke, and that staying close to the floor/ground (crawling if necessary) is the best procedure in a smoke-filled area.
  7. Help keep crowds at a safe distance from the building after it has been evacuated.
  8. Do not return to the building until a Safety officer or a library staff person who has been instructed by the officer or other official, says that you may.

If you sight a fire or a significant amount of smoke which has not set off an alarm:

  1. If you have any doubt about your ability to fight a fire don't try.  Pull the nearest fire alarm (located at all exits) and follow the above directions for evacuating the building.  Be available to provide information to Public Safety or fire officials when they arrive.
  2. If you feel you can fight the fire (e.g., small one in a wastebasket) use the nearest fire extinguisher (see Appendix 1).  All fire extinguishers are Multi-Purpose ABC extinguishers.
  3. Notify the Administrative Office (3661 or 3471) after you use an extinguisher. The Administrative Office should call the Office of Public Safety (3379) so that it can be recharged.  The phone call should be followed by a written memo requesting the same recharge, including the time and date of the oral request.
