An early~ if early—if not the earliest~ reference earliest—reference in my published writings to (what I eventually came to speak of as) the two levels of living understandingly is in the Preface to the first edition of The Reality of God and Other Essays~ where Essays—where I speak of "the two different levels-of levels—of our existence itself~ itself, and of our reflection on it-at it—at which the problem of God actually arises" (x).
