As a member of the Library Faculty, the Dean has the right to the peer evaluation procedures to which all librarians are entitled. Such a review is mutually beneficial to the Dean and the Library. It provides the Dean’s supervisor with valuable information from within the Library concerning the Dean’s performance. This input would not otherwise be systematically available for the person to whom the Dean reports. The Library evaluation ensures that the Library’s view of the Dean is clearly communicated.

Although the form of the peer evaluation for the Dean should be parallel to that of other librarians, the Dean occupies a unique position. The form and procedures therefore need to be distinctive, although closely related to existing Faculty forms.

PROCEDURE FOR LIBRARY EVALUATION OF THE LIBRARY DEAN

1. The Library Committee on Faculty will perform a periodic evaluation of the Library Dean. Prior to the LCOF’s evaluation, it will solicit input from all Library faculty and staff, using the Library Dean Performance Evaluation Form. The results will be collated by the LCOF in a manner which assures the anonymity of the respondents.

2. The Dean will submit a self-evaluation to LCOF, using the Librarian’s Annual Report and Self-Evaluation form.

3. With the input of the Library faculty and staff, the LCOF will use the Library Dean Performance Evaluation Form to evaluate the Dean.

4. Following completion of the form, the evaluation will be delivered to the Dean, and a meeting with the LCOF will be held.

5. Following the meeting, the LCOF’s evaluation of the Dean will be forwarded to the person to whom the Dean reports. The collated input from the Library Faculty and staff will be given to the Library Dean.

6. Library evaluations of the Dean will be performed one year after appointment, and every four years thereafter.
