ALL BOMB THREATS SHOULD BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY

If you receive a bomb threat phone call:

  1. DO NOT HANG UP THE TELEPHONE. Even if the caller has broken the connection, DO NOT HANG UP THE TELEPHONE. Follow Telecom’s instructions on “Malicious and Threatening Phone Calls”, Appendix 8.
  2. While on the phone, attempt to find out:
      1. What time the bomb will explode
      2. What kind of bomb it is
      3. Where the bomb was placed
      4. Who is claiming responsibility for the bomb
    1. Things to remember after the call:
      1. Identifiable background noises
      2. Age and sex of the caller
      3. Voice characteristics
  3. If possible, have another staff member call Public Safety (4444) and a Circulation supervisor (3486) while you are still talking to the threatening caller.
DO NOT RISK DISCONNECTING THE THREATENING CALL BY USING THE "HOLD" BUTTON.
  4. If it is not possible to have someone else call for help while you are on the phone with the caller, as soon as the caller hangs up, pull/set off the fire alarm closest to you. Leave the building, but be available for the arrival of Public Safety (4444) to tell why the alarm was pulled in order that the information the caller gave you can be transferred to the proper personnel.
  5. It is not your responsibility to risk your life by searching for a bomb. If you see a suspicious object while exiting the building, note its location, and tell the Circulation unit and/or Public Safety as to its whereabouts.

DO NOT TOUCH OR MOVE THE SUSPICIOUS OBJECT.

If you receive a bomb threat in your voice mailbox:

1. DO NOT ERASE, FORWARD, ARCHIVE, ETC. THE RECORDED MESSAGE.

IMMEDIATELY HANG UP THE PHONE. Follow Telecom’s instructions in Appendix 8.

2. Call the Circulation unit from another phone. DO NOT TRY TO TRANSFER THE CALL TO EITHER THE CIRCULATION UNIT OR THE PUBLIC SAFETY OFFICE AS YOU WILL LOSE THE ENVELOPE DATA.

3. Give the Circulation unit all the information that you can, especially the time that the caller claims the explosion will occur.

<The Circulation supervisor will immediately call Public Safety and set off the fire alarm located next to the main entrance.

1. After you exit the building, inform the Circulation supervisor posted outside the main entrance where you can be found in order that the phone message can be retrieved after the building has been secured.

2. It is not your responsibility to risk your life by searching for the bomb. If you see a suspicious object while exiting the building, note its location. Report this information to the Circulation supervisor posted outside the building and/or to a member of the Department of Public Safety.

DO NOT TOUCH OR MOVE THE SUSPICIOUS OBJECT.
