It is not always easy to identify thieving in progress as our users have to move materials from non-circulating collections and stack areas to other study areas, tables, carrels and/or photocopiers in order to use the materials.
Circulation supervisors and other concerned staff should be familiar with the relevant state law (see Appendix 7).
- If you observe what may be a theft, concealment (tantamount to theft under state law) or attempted removal of library materials:Call Public Safety (4444)
andNotify a Circulation supervisor (3486).
Be prepared to provide a description of the person, the location, and type of materials. - Do not attempt to confront or restrain the thief.
- Circulation staff have procedures to respond to security gate and door alarms.
- If a Drew student is caught concealing or illegally removing library property/materials, Public Safety should be notified by the Circulation unit. If a search for materials is conducted, a Library representative will be asked by Public Safety to identify library materials.
