An early~ if not the earliest~ reference in my published writings to (what I eventually came to speak of as) the two levels of living understandingly is in the Preface to the first edition of The Reality of God and Other Essays~ where I speak of "the two different levels-of our existence itself~ and of our reflection on it-at which the problem of God actually arises" (x).
