When Maurice uses such expressions as "manly character," "manly exercise," "true and manly freedom," or "manliness" (Subscription No Bondage: 56, 80, 81), they are evidently to be taken in the same broad, nongender-specific sense as his use of the term "man." In other words, he usually uses them eulogistically.
Moreover, "manly" is to be taken as usually connoting "authentically human," and "manliness," "authentic humanness."
