The distinction between the empirical-historical Jesus and the existential-historical Jesus can be clarified as equivalent to the distinction between the Jesus who is the past subject of his own faith and witness and the Jesus who is the present ground (i.e., explicit primal ontic source) of my faith and witness.

Perhaps it may also be clarified as equivalent to the distinction between Jesus present as past and Jesus present as present.
