What is required for a witness to be appropriate to Jesus Christ?

Two things are required: first, that the witness be formally appropriate to Jesus in that it re-presents him as of decisive existential significance, and thus as making explicit the true answer to our existential question about the meaning of our existence; and second, that it be materially appropriate to Jesus in that it re-presents as the true answer to our existential question the answer that Jesus himself makes explicit.
