What Hartshorne calls in some places "the eternal principle of the evolution of laws, the creation one after another of 'cosmic epochs,'" is evidently what he refers to elsewhere as "the necessary," which he immediately identifies as "the principle of possibility itself, the creative ground of alternativeness in reality by virtue of which alone there is any contingency" (IO; 49; AD 80 f.).
