ARIEL

If a request  is marked with "ARIEL", it should be scanned and sent to the borrowing library through the Ariel system.  Click on the Ariel icon on the desktop.

 To Scan Documents directly from a bound periodical or book:

  • Click on Document, then Scan. This opens the Scan Box.
  • Unclick “Auto Scan”. Make sure “Scan and Send” is clicked.
  • Place the  cover sheet face down in the scanner.     Click Scan.  Check page view on screen. If cut-off, rescan.
  • Remove cover sheet.
  • Place the book on the upper left corner of the scanner. Press down so the area near the gutter is scanned. Close the cover carefully.
  • Click Scan. Wait for the page to scan; check page view which appears on the screen.  If the page scanned properly (not cut off) continue this process until all the pages are done. (Click scan for each page. If scanning 2 pages at a time, click for each time you turn the page)
  • Click End.
  • Scan the Request number from the barcode on the request. It will appear in the document ID box. Click on the “To” box under Destinations, then, either:
    • Click on “Select” and look for the code that matches the code after ‘borrower” on the request form.  (Make sure the Ariel address that appears in the box matches the Ariel address listed on the request form, if any) or
    • Type in the Ariel address located on the request form.
  • Only if you entered a new Ariel address, add it to the address book by clicking on “add to address book”. Enter the 3 letter code in alias. Click OK.
  • Click on Send & hold in the right corner.
  • Click OK.
  • After sending the document, write “Ariel” and “scanned from book” on  paperwork. Draw diagonal line through request and file in Completes Box, behind Journal/ Serials or IFM tab.

To scan documents from a photocopy

  • Click on Document, then Scan.
  • Click “Auto Scan”. Make sure “Scan then Send” is clicked.
  •  Click Scan.
  •  Scan the Request number from the barcode on the request. It will appear in the  document ID box. Click on the “To” box under Destinations, then, either:
    •      Click on “Select” and look for the code that matches the code after ‘borrower” on the request form.  (Make sure the ariel address that appears in the box matches the Ariel address listed on the request form, if any) or
    •       Type in the Ariel address located on the request form.
  •  Click on “Send then Delete”.
  • Only if you entered a new Ariel address, add it to the address book by clicking on “add to address book”. Enter the 3 letter code in alias. Click OK.
  •  Place the cover sheet and the photocopied article face up in the automatic document feeder.
  • Click OK. After scanning,
  •  Click End
  • After sending the document,  Stamp “Send Date” and enter today’s date. Write “Ariel” on  paperwork. Draw diagonal line through top half of request and file in Completes Box, behind Journal/ Serials or IFM tab. Write the ILL request number on the article and place on top of the other Ariel articles on the shelf above the office computer.
