Older Canon drivers (and there seem to be a 3.0 set possibly packaged in with MacOS Monterey) cause color profile issues. If you use Canon's printing utility, the correct color profile is used. Printing from, say, Photoshop - even when set to having Photoshop managing the colors and selecting the correct paper - results in wildly oversaturated images with a distorted color space.

You can verify the driver setting by going into Settings > Printers, selecting the printer in question, and clicking on the "Options" button. The incorrect driver version is 3.0, the correct one is 24.20, and it's available in the "CUPS Printer Driver" package from Canon.

Steps to clean up/fix if printers are already set up

  1. Log in as a user with Admin access
  2. Open Settings > Printers, right click in the printer list area and select "Reset" - clearing all printers. Note - this will clear ALL printers configured, including, say, an Epson that happens to be also installed. Removing the printers individually might work, but hasn't been tested at the time this is being written.

Installing after cleanup or for the first time

  1. Download and install: https://en.canon-cna.com/support/consumer_products/products/printers/inkjet/other_series/imageprograf_pro-1000.html?type=drivers&language=en&os=macos%2011%20(big%20sur)
  2. Go back to Settings > Printers and click on the plus sign. When it finds the Canon printers, select one of the pair
  3. It'll auto-populate the printer name, and the default driver selection is "Auto" - and it'll say it's using "Canon PRO-1000 Series". Sure, it is. The 3.0 version, not the 24.20 version. Don't proceed to add the printer
  4. Pull down the "Use" drop-down menu and choose the option to "Select" the driver.
  5. When presented with the list, click on "Canon PRO-1000 Series" and confirm. Yes, it has the same name, no it isn't the same driver.
  6. Now you can add the printer. To double-check, select the printer in the printer list and click the "Options" button, the version (if the above installer is used) should be 24.20.
  7. Assuming that worked, repeat the steps for the second Canon Printer.

If the 3.0 version is still installed, repeat the cleanups steps and re-add, making sure you don't allow the MacOS add printer dialog to auto-select the driver. If it happens again, try installing the driver package above, it's possible the install wasn't complete. As far as I can tell, any time we add these printers we have to make sure it's selected the correct drive.r

If that fails to work, Canon or Apple has changed something, and we'll have to revisit.
