Biographical Note

Ronald Stuart Thomas, Welsh poet and Church in Wales clergyman, was born in Cardiff in 1913. He studied classics at the University College of North Wales, Bangor, and theology at St. Michael’s College, Llandaff. Ordained in 1937, he served at Chirk, Denbighshire from 1936 to 1940; at Tallarn Green, Flintshire until 1942; Manafon in Mongomeryshire from 1942 to 1954; at Eglwys-fach, near Aberystwyth from 1954 to 1967; and at Aberdaron, at the western end of the Llŷn peninsula, from 1967 until his retirement from the church in 1978, when he moved to Sarn Thiw, a cottage set above the bay of Port Neigwl. He was married to English painter Mildred (Elsi) Eldridge from 1940 until her death in 1991; they had one son, Gwydion. In 1996 he married Elisabeth Agnes (Betty) Vernon. Thomas died at Pentrefelin in 2000.

Thomas published his first three volumes of poetry during the years at Manafon. With Song at the year’s turning, essentially a compilation of those volumes, which appeared in 1955 with an introduction by John Betjeman, he achieved critical acclaim and won the Royal Society of Literature’s Heinemann Award. Other awards include the queen’s medal for poetry in 1964, and nomination for the Nobel Prize for literature in 1996. (He lost to Seamus Heaney.) In addition to nearly 25 volumes of poetry in English, he wrote two prose works in Welsh, an autobiography, Neb, and a memoir, Blwyddyn yn Llŷn.
