Samuel W. Bowne, a trustee of Drew Theological Seminary, donated $30,000 to build and furnish this gymnasium, which first opened in 1910.

Drew students used the facilities, including the pool depicted above below, until 1958 , when Bowne Gymnasium became Bowne Theatre, now the F.M. Kirby Shakespeare Theatre.
