Keeping in mind that Public Safety should always be called immediately in emergency situations (x4444), the procedures outlined in this manual are to be considered not as rules, but as guidelines to be followed in the judgement of the individual employee.

INTRODUCTION

This manual was originally prepared by the Library Disaster Preparedness Committee and reviewed by Tom Evans, Director of Public Safety, prior to its being issued to the staff in 1992. It has been updated over the years since. It is intended to serve as a guide for staff members in emergency situations. It is important that staff members acquaint themselves with the procedures in the manual prior to the occurrence of an emergency situation.

The supervisor in each department should make sure that the appropriate information for their department has been filled in where necessary and that this information is kept current. It should be part of orientation training for all new staff members. The Manual should be kept in an easily accessible place (usually near the emergency flashlight and other emergency supplies such as first aid provisions) in order that its absence does not handicap following the correct procedures.

It is suggested that other university units which are housed in the Library should familiarize themselves with this Manual and supplement it to meet their own needs after review with the Office of Public Safety.

The Committee gratefully acknowledges the use it made of other university libraries' disaster manuals, especially the debt it owes to the University of Wisconsin (Madison) for developing a format which seemed appropriate for our use.

The Committee wishes to thank Pat McCormick for executing the imaginative cover drawing.
