An early -- if early—if not the earliest -- reference earliest—reference in my published writings to (what I eventually came to speak of as) the two levels of living understandingly is in the Preface to the first edition of The Reality of God and Other Essays -- where —where I speak of "the two different levels -- of levels—of our existence itself, and of our reflection on it -- at it—at which the problem of God actually arises" (x).
