An early -- if not the earliest -- reference in my published writings to (what I eventually came to speak of as) the two levels of living understandingly is in the Preface to the first edition of The Reality of God and Other Essays -- where I speak of "the two different levels -- of our existence itself, and of our reflection on it -- at which the problem of God actually arises" (x).
