What is Theology?

1. What would happen if I undertook to raise and answer this question in the context of an alternative theory of science such as Habermas's or Apel's? This would presuppose my agreeing with the claim that the core of such a philosophy of science is the idea of leading interests of knowledge.

2. One would begin, presumably, with interests, proceed to questions, methods, criteria, and contexts.

3. One could also employ the basic notion of "two levels of faith and reason" to distinguish (1) in the case of the interest in objective knowledge, between natural science and metaphysics; (2) in the case of the interest in communicative understanding, between morality and self-understanding; and

(3) in the case of the interest in emancipatory self-reflection, between, emancipation and redemption. In this way, one could incorporate humanism while going beyond it.
