The Notebooks of Schubert Ogden

PDF Version of this Document

The earliest Christian witness, in both the pre-Easter form of the Jesus-kerygma and the post-Easter form of the Christ-kerygma, is to the apocalypticist assumptions made in formulating it as the NT writings are to the OT writings. In both cases, the first term formulates the assertion that it (they) present(s) as the answer to the question formulated by the second.

Thus the earliest Christian witness formulates the assertion that it presents as the answer to the question formulated by the same apocalypticist assumptions it makes in formulating the answer. In the same way, the NT writings formulate the assertion that they present as the answer to the question formulated by the same OT writings that they draw on in formulating the answer.
