What does it mean to say, with Niebuhr and others, that "the law of love is not a law at all," if not precisely that love lies on another, qualitatively different level from all that is properly moral (including "legal" and "political"), i.e., on the transcendental level of existence or self-understanding as distinct from the categorial level of action, strictly and properly so-called?
