The point is obvious, and I may even have taken it into account to a certain extent in my previous thinking. But, in any case, if Christ is "the transformer of culture" (H. R. Niebuhr), Christ is also the transformer of religion, since religion is a form of culture, however unique relative to all of the other forms.

Of course, the transformation involved even in the transformation of religion is in—terms of the distinction employed in '"For Freedom Christ Has Set Us Free': The Christian Understanding of Ultimate Transformation"—only a "penultimate," not an "ultimate," transformation.
