The Notebooks of Schubert Ogden

My view that the question christology answers is, finally, the existential question, Who is God?/Who am I?, converges very closely, indeed, with Maurice's view that this question is the question about the (unchangeable) foundation of one's existence as a human being.

Maurice argues that the gospel is addressed to those who know, and yet, because of their fragmentariness as well as their sin, do not know, but are seeking to know, the foundation on which their life rests (cf., e.g., The Divine Order: 146). Similarly, I argue that the christological assertion answers the question of those who know, and yet, because of their fragmentariness as well as their sin, do not know, but are seeking to know, the ultimate meaning of their existence as parts, together with others, of the all-encompassing whole, i.e., the meaning of ultimate reality for us and our authentic self-understanding in relation to it.
