The Notebooks of Schubert Ogden

Philosophy in its first, purely formal, analytic phase is simply critical interpretation. But it is critical interpretation directed toward analyzing the "deep structure" of all the various kinds of meaning, as distinct from the "surface meaning" of particular expressions.

In its second, properly existential phase, however, philosophy is critical validation as well as critical interpretation. And because this is so, its critical interpretation in this phase is also directed toward interpreting the surface meaning of the answers to the existential question, expressed or implied, whose claims to truth it critically validates.
