Already for the Greeks, the standard for measuring all specific "laws" (νόμοι) is the "unwritten law" (νόμοϛ άγραφοϛ), the "common law" (κοινϛ νόμοϛ), or, as it can also be called—in effect, confusing the distinction between "ϕύσιϛ" and what exists "φύσει," on the one hand, and "νόμοϛ" and what exists "νόμω," on the other-—the "law of nature," or the "natural law" (νόμοϛ φύσεωϛ).
