With the exception of guide and/or aid animals (currently rhesus monkeys and guide/aid dogs), animals are not permitted in the Library.  However well-behaved, they create discomfort for many Library users.

If you see a patron enter with an animal:

  1. Ascertain if it is a guide/aid animal. This should be self evident, but if you are uncertain, check with the patron.  If so, tell the patron that it is welcome in the Library.
  2. If the animal proves to be a pet/companion, courteously explain to the patron the nature of our policy and ask that the animal be removed from the Library.
  3. If the patron refuses to remove the animal, call Public Safety (3379) to ask them to enforce the policy and then inform the Circulation unit (3486) of your action.

If you see an animal loose in the Library (e.g., squirrel, bird, unattended dog, etc.):

  1. Do not attempt to capture the animal but try to keep it in sight if possible.
  2. Notify Public Safety (4444) immediately.
  3. If the animal is of a potentially biting or rabies-infected species, warn all patrons in the area where the animal was sighted.
  4. Inform the Circulation unit (3486) of the action you have taken.
