Charles Taylor says of us as human beings that we are "a self-defining animal" ("Interpretation and the Science of Man," Review of Metaphysics, 25: 3-51).

Hartshorne says: "People have looked for freedom in action, and of course freedom must somehow show up in action. But the first stage of freedom is the way in which one interprets or experiences [why not, instead, experiences or interprets?] the world. Only you or I can determine our way of feeling and thinking [n.b.: not thinking and feeling!] our environment" (CSPM: 5).
