Among some Native American peoples, the “half man/half woman” was often seen as a harmonizing of physical & spiritual opposites, and played a significant role within the community.  17th-century New England understood homosexual behavior as sinful, but not as an indication of an innate proclivity, while Virginia remained largely silent on the issue.
