Please Note: You will need to be on campus to access Software Center. We will also enforce the update by pushing it out to all eligible machines by October 7, 2025, so be sure your files are backed up if you do not update yourself before then.

Windows 10 will reach its end of support on October 14th, 2025. From then on, machines running Windows 10 will no longer be provided crucial security updates. It is imperative that we upgrade all computers that are eligible to run Windows 11, and extend support for those that cannot upgrade past 10, both for security and the user experience.

➢ Checking Your Current Windows Version

To check your current Windows Operating System's version, please search 'winver' in the Search section of your task bar. "winver" should appear as a result (with the smaller text "Run Command)". Hit Enter or click Open.

You will get a detailed window. In this example, this asset has already been updated to 11, specifically Version 24H2 (The most up-to-date version at time of writing this).

If you are running Windows 10 still, please continue.

➢ Can This Machine Run Windows 11?

If you know what model computer you were assigned by the UT team, please check this list for what models are compatible with Windows 11.

  • If the machine you were assigned is not compatible with Windows 10, please create a ticket with the Helpdesk team at help.drew.edu identifying the computer you are using - with its serial number and operating system version - so that we can work with you.
  • If the machine you were assigned is compatible with Windows 10 and you've been instructed to proceed with these directions, please continue.

➢ Updating Windows 10 to 11 Via Software Center

** Please ensure you have a recent backup of any files saved to the hard drive of the Drew asset you are using. See Storage Options and Backing Up Your Data for more information. **

** Reminder: You must be on campus to follow these directions. **

  1. Open 'Software Center'. You can search "Software Center" in the Start menu search bar.
  2. Once launched, you should see a window similar to this:
  3. Select Operating Systems and then click on Upgrade to Windows 11 24H2 (If you don't see Upgrade to Windows 11 24H2, please reach out to helpdesk@drew.edu or help.drew.edu with information about the computer you are using).
  4. Click Install.
  5. That will initialize the pre-update warning. Take note: we highly recommend making sure all your files are backed up before proceeding. If ready to proceed, again select Install.
  6. This process will take some time. Please expect about 2 hours of down time (the machine's age, free space, and current version cause some variance).
  7. Once complete, the Login Screen will appear, looking like the image below.
  8. After initial login, you will be prompted with a walk through of features. Please feel free to disable any and all Microsoft tracking requests.
