Drew University strives to support students in achieving success in their academic and extracurricular endeavors. When illness or significant personal hardship impacts a student’s ability to successfully meet the requirements of his or her course of study, the University will strive to assist the student in best meeting their challenges. In unusual circumstances, a student may be unable to perform the essential functions required of a student or may represent a threat to himself or to others and may be required to involuntarily withdraw from the University in order to address these issues.
Voluntary Withdrawals: Voluntary Withdrawal: Withdrawal form is available via Treehouse. It is essential that a student notify the University if he/she is not planning to return. The enrollment and housing deposits are forfeited if the University is not formally notified of the withdrawal. Students leaving after the last day to officially withdrawal, as noted on the academic calendar, will be subject to grades of “F” at the time of withdrawal, unless an appeal is approved by the Committee on Academic Standing.
Interim restrictions or actions: The status of a student and a student’s right to be present on the campus and to attend classes may be suspended on an interim basis, when there is an immediate threat to the health, safety, or well-being of the student or to other members of the campus community. The Dean of Students (or designee) may, after an initial assessment of conduct affecting the health, safety, or welfare of the campus community and upon finding that such a threat exists, revoke a student’s right to be on campus or suspend a student from specified locations, activities, and programming, including class, for an interim period, pending a meeting as described below. Any interim restriction shall become immediately effective upon the required finding being made. Drew will discuss voluntary leave with the student as an initial option.
Reconsideration of interim restrictions or actions: On application of the affected student, the Dean, or designee, should discuss with the suspended student the available information regarding the student’s conduct and whether the conduct and surrounding circumstances reasonably indicate that the presence of the student on campus or in class continues to constitute a threat to health, safety, or well-being.
Actions beyond interim restrictions or actions: Matters that are not resolved voluntarily and which continue to represent a threat to public health or safety may result in an administrative meeting, which may be held by phone, video link, or via written communication. Prior to any final determination, a student will be advised of the information regarding his or her situation, afforded notice of the meeting, and provided the opportunity to submit pertinent information. Students are required to comply with any required assessment processes and requirements.
The final determination should be supported by an individualized assessment of the student to the degree that is reasonably possible.
Should a student’s conduct pose a threat to public health or safety, significantly disrupt the life of the community, or violate University codes of conduct or community standards, the University may also take other appropriate action, including interim actions, as well as disciplinary action, which could result in disciplinary sanctions, suspension expulsion or involuntary withdrawal
There will be no refund of tuition and fees for a student who is expelled or suspended (from the University or from housing.)
Prior to readmission: The student will consult with the appropriate University official to review the available, but limited, University resources, or external resources, which may be of assistance in a student (CLA, Caspersen and Theological) returning to Drew and participating fully in the essential academic, extracurricular, or social life of the University community.
